A lot of Illustrators I see as inspirations are already well
established, with little to no need for minor promotional materials outside of
their websites and presumably business cards. However I still found plenty of
interesting possibilities:
Brandon Graham (Creator of King City and Multiple Warheads)
for instance started as a graffiti artist and an illustrator of pornographic
comics (Multiple Warheads actually started as a porn comic)
And while I don’t feel comfortable drawing porn, graffiti is
certainly an avenue I could consider.
Another thing I looked at is Graham’s web presence. His main
site seems to be a WordPress blog (found here: https://royalboiler.wordpress.com)
but it seems like less of a portfolio (he presumably doesn’t need one anymore,
having multiple published books) and more of a general blog. He also operates a
tumblr (http://royalboiler.tumblr.com/)
where he tends to post about updates on his work, behind the scenes images and
answers questions from fans.
As well as both of those he also maintains a Twitter account
(@royalboiler) and a DeviantArt account (http://royalboiler.deviantart.com/).
So despite having his own domain name, he has quite a heavy
web presence which I find interesting. Are physical promotional items all that
necessary in the digital age? Or is Graham simply renowned enough that a few blogs
and a twitter account all he really needs?
